Can you believe I ran in Old St. Nick at Z Cafe in Mesa? I swear it. This photo is mine and was not posed.
As you know, this little blog takes me all over the Valley. Yesterday was particularly busy, compounded by extra tasks brought on by the holidays. At 2pm after running non-stop, my growling belly led me to Z Cafe where I found myself serendipitously in the company of Santa Claus.
There I was, at a corner table scarfing quietly enjoying my big green salad and homemade chicken noodle soup when Santa walked in and ordered a latte. The owner, Dan Ponce (behind the counter) told me that in fact, this man was a retired Santa, and now a lunchtime regular. It warms my holiday heart to know that Santa eats local.
So what could be better than running into Santa? When I first arrived the cafe was filled with Mesa’s finest Firemen. Not too terrible. Apparently Z Cafe offers police and firemen a 20% discount and so has become a favorite of the local men (and women) in uniform.
Located conveniently off the US 60 near the south west corner of Alma School and Baseline, Z Cafe is an easy east Valley favorite. The menu features large portion breakfast burritos, big green salads, made from scratch soups, piled high sandwiches and wraps and homemade sides like fruit, pasta and potato salad. The breads selection and ingredients are always fresh and the service is consistently fast, friendly and satisfying. Yesterday I chose to dine-in, however calling ahead for faster pick up or requesting local delivery have been life savers in the past.
During this time of year we all tend to run ourselves ragged, Santa and Firemen included. Taking time for at least 1 quality meal a day makes all the difference in my productivity. An early start and a day booked with appointments often leaves no energy left to prepare dinner results inevitably with exhaustion, poor food choices and a hunger tantrum by the end of the day. Taking the time to stop for a nourishing meal served in a quick and friendly atmosphere keeps me fueled up and pressing forward. Z Cafe is just this kind of place. If you find yourself in the area I highly recommend you stop in.
